Steve Carlton tossed a complete game as the Philadelphia Indians beat the
California Cubs by a score of 12 to 5.

California fell behind quickly as the Philadelphia offense came through in the
first inning plating 3 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Bake McBride led off and
he ripped a base-knock. McBride was running on the next pitch and he stole
second. Philadelphia continued their aggressive style with another stolen
base. After an out was recorded, Mike Schmidt stepped up to the plate and he
would ground out. Greg Luzinski came up to bat and lashed a single. Garry
Maddox kept the rally going and clubbed a two-run home run. Tim McCarver
stepped up next and he drew a walk. Nolan Ryan then uncorked a wild one that
found its way to the backstop. Philadelphia banged out 11 hits on the night.

Carlton(4-0) got the victory, allowing 5 runs for the game. Ryan(2-4) suffered
the loss. He struggled with his control issuing 10 walks in 7 innings.
