With the hometown crowd on the edge of their seats, Baltimore Pirates came
from behind to top California Cubs, 6 to 4.

Baltimore came through with the game-winning runs in the bottom of the 9th
inning plating 3 runs on 3 base hits. Milt May kicked off the action when he
doubled. Phil Garner was next and he ripped a single. Garner took second on
a stolen base. Al Oliver followed next and he clubbed a three-run home run
giving Baltimore the victory and sending the 27,153 home-town fans home
happy. Baltimore ended up with 12 hits for the game while California had 8.

The victory went to Rich Gossage(1-1) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs.
Rick Reuschel(1-3) was the losing pitcher. He got hammered, allowing 12 hits
and 2 walks in 8 innings.

'Wow, that was fun!', Gossage said following the game. 'Once in a while you
play a game that reminds you just why you got into this business to begin
with!'
