Jon Matlack came through with a solid 9 innings as the Boston Mets defeated
the Atlanta Athletics by the score of 6 to 1 at Oakland Coliseum.

Boston took the lead for good in the 2nd inning with 2 runs utilizing 2 base
hits. Fred Lynn kicked off the action when he drew a walk. After an out was
recorded, Denny Doyle stepped in and he slapped a single. One out later,
Matlack came to bat and laced a single. Carlton Fisk followed next and he
reached on an error. Bernie Carbo was next to bat, but he was a strikeout
victim. That was all the runs Matlack(2-3) needed. Boston had a total of 9
hits for the game.

Rick Langford(1-5) absorbed the loss. He pitched 5 innings allowing 4 hits
and 3 walks. 'Matlack took our guys to school' HAL said. 'Too bad he doesn't
pitch for us - it would make my job a whole lot easier!'
