53,406 fans were treated to a fine game at Cleveland Stadium as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Philadelphia Indians won by the
slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.

Philadelphia came up with the deciding runs in the 8th inning plating 2 runs
on 3 hits. Mike Schmidt led off and started the rally when he doubled. Tim
McCarver came next and he laced a base-knock. Davey Johnson then laid down a
sacrifice bunt. After another out, Richie Hebner came to bat and doubled.
Bake McBride stepped into the box and was walked intentionally. Detroit had
a chance in the 9th but they came up short.

The winning pitcher was Tug McGraw(2-1) who allowed no runs in 1/3 of an
inning. Gene Garber recorded the save, his 7th. Steve Foucault(0-1) was
charged with the loss in relief. He gave up 3 hits and 1 walk in 2 innings.

'We just made a lot of mistakes, mostly mental,' Randy Newman said. 'It's bad
enough when the other team beats you, but when you start beating yourselves,
that's really bad.'
