41,236 fans watched an exciting game at Yankee Stadium. The San Francisco
Yankees topped the St. Louis Twins by the slimmest of margins, 10 to 9.

Both teams had scored 7 runs after nine full innings. Finally, San Francisco
prevailed in the 11th inning. Paul Blair opened up the inning nicely when he
drew a walk. Gary Thomasson followed and he lined a base-hit. Reggie
Jackson then doubled. Thurman Munson was a strikeout victim, unable to help
out. Willie McCovey came to the plate and smashed a two-run homer. St.
Louis had 16 hits in the game while San Francisco had 13, but San Francisco
had the more timely hits.

Sparky Lyle(3-0) went 1 inning allowing 2 runs for the win. Rawly
Eastwick(1-1) was given the loss in relief. Roger Freed blasted a homerun
and had 5 RBI but despite his efforts, it wasn't enough to put St. Louis over
the top.
