Catcher Johnny Bench blasted 2 homeruns as the Detroit Reds destroyed the
Boston Mets by a score of 15 to 4 at Tiger Stadium.

Bench had a big day at the plate. He emptied the bases with a Grand Slam
homerun in the 3rd inning, lined a base-hit in the 8th inning and lofted a
solo-blast 'downtown' in the 8th inning. Detroit provided plenty of action
in the 3rd inning scoring 4 runs and the 8th inning which saw them score 9
runs on 8 hits. Detroit had 15 hits for the afternoon while Boston had 6.

The victory went to Fred Norman(5-11) who went 6 and 2/3 innings, allowing 4
runs. Jim Crawford earned his 1st save. The losing pitcher was Fergie
Jenkins(5-11). He allowed Detroit 6 runs in 5 innings of work.
